JIMEY THE WOODPILE MOUSE

The late, great Norman Bridwell, creator of Clifford the Big Red Dog, wrote in a handwritten letter to author Elar Ericsson after reading Jimey the Woodpile Mouse, “Dear Elar, Thank you for the book. You have a very unique art style. I like it very much. Being a mouse fan myself I appreciate the story.” He continued, “I hope your books are successful. There is something special about making a child smile.”

Jimey (j-eye-mee) was a woodpile mouse. He lived in the woodpile outside of Farmer Karson’s farmhouse. Jimey loved his woodpile. But there was one big problem. Jimey’s woodpile was quickly shrinking! Every day the Farmer took logs from the woodpile, and now there were only a few logs left. Jimey worried that his woodpile would soon be gone! Where would he live? How would he stay warm and dry? But one thing worried Jimey most of all-how would he stay safe from the Farmer’s cat, Kloee?

This debut story from author and illustrator Elar Ericsson gently addresses fear and worry with the comfort of being protected, loved, and cared for. The simple message easily translates to children and adults alike. Available in hardcover and for iOS and iPad, the full color, delightfully detailed illustrations compliment the story and keep young eyes busy with look-and-find activities. the iPad version also includes narration, highlighting read-along text, and sounds!

Review from ThePictureBookReview.com

“Jimey (rhymes with Eye Me!) the Woodpile Mouse is a beautiful, kind, and one of the most reassuring stories I’ve ever read. It is so well done that it stays with you long after you’ve read it, quietly reminding you not to worry because everything is going to be okay.

My eldest son adores Jimey and we’ve read it a countless number of times. It is a family favorite and one that I’m always up for reading!

Why I Like This Book

The art alone is disarming and enchanting. The brightly colored, digitally impressionistic landscapes juxtaposed with black and white mouse and cat are inviting, invigorating, and instantaneously accessible to even the youngest readers.

I didn’t realize that there was a cure for worry — and the prescription is to read this book, as needed, to assuage young and old worriers alike. I love, love, love this book.

Jimey the Woodpile Mouse is as sweet as a deep breath in a frantic moment that leaves you smiling, grounded, and reminded that there are wonderful, incredible people in this world doing lots of amazing things to help make the world a better place.

At the end of the hardcover edition there is a game. You look at the pictures with single words written underneath, and then you go back through the book and find those pictures. It is a fun seek and find exercise.

This book is so happy! It lets you become Jimey the mouse and live his life. You have his same joys and share in his same worries. Then you get to experience the joy when he finds out that everything is going to be alright.”

KIRKUS REVIEW

A mouse fears the loss of his woodpile home…in this picture book for beginning readers by debut author/illustrator Ericsson.

Jimey…lives in a woodpile on Farmer Karson’s farm. He loves his home: it keeps him dry, warm, and safe from Kloee, a tuxedo cat illustrated in a similar, geometric fashion. As winter approaches, the woodpile becomes smaller and smaller, and Jimey begins to wonder what will happen if it vanishes altogether. But when the mouse is at his lowest, he hears a crashing sound and finds that not only has his woodpile been replenished, but also that the farmer has been watching over him. The allegorical tone of Farmer Karson’s statement (“There’s no need to be afraid, my friend. I’ve been looking out for you all along”) is reminiscent of tales in which a loving God watches over his followers, but the focus of the book is appropriately on Jimey’s joys and fears. At first glance, readers may find the two distinct illustration styles to be dissonant—the geometric patterns of Jimey and Kloee, and the background images, which have an altered, photographic quality. But by the end, the contrast seems to fit the story. Ericsson also includes seek-and-find pages at the end of the book, encouraging young readers to look for recurring details, such as a ladybug that appears on several pages, or a teddy bear in Jimey’s home…Youngsters will be happy for Jimey when his woodpile is restored.

A low-conflict, quiet book with an intriguing mix of illustrations and a message about not worrying too much about the future.
